My daughter and I drove up the coast, chasing sunlight and the feel of sand beneath our feet. We passed through the charred hills of the Palisades fire along PCH—where the earth still smolders, and yet, from the ashes, we will rise.
The burnout is real.
The discordant chorus in my mind throws me to the floor, curling me into a ball, begging for silence.
I long for the days when I could write about the secret garden I once found behind a crumbling wall on my street.
Back when magic felt possible, and the words came easily.
Now, my notebook sits heavy with half-finished stories of the heart, stories I fear no one will read.
Maybe because we’ve misplaced our hearts, lost beneath the weight of hate and fear that seems to bleed into everything.
Sometimes, I write from a quiet, unspoken duty, just to keep naming what’s right in front of us.
But it feels futile.
These days, people would rather cling to the false comfort of fear and hate, convinced that if they descend far enough into the dark, maybe… just maybe, they’ll stumble upon some flicker of light.
But that darkness only hungers.
It consumes.
It lures the lonely with the promise of belonging, then demands more and more, until even their souls feel devoured.
And still, I fight.
I spin near the edges of that void, resisting the pull.
I write, when I can, about what beauty remains, tucked between burned-out cars and broken systems.
Because sometimes, that’s the most defiant thing we can do:
To witness the world in ruins and still choose to see the flowers.

Thank you for this beautiful truth that I relate to so much!
I have a collection of personal photos titled "The Beauty of Decay" most of which are fallen or dying flowers, an oddly, beautifully posed, dead squirrel, and tree trunks returning to dirt. Sometimes I just happen to be given a glimpse at the ordinary extra in a thing no longer itself, and, well, the art that fire left on the car is quite stunning.
