I didn’t start writing until I was in my 30’s. And the first time I actually wrote something, it was out of desperation. I never believed I could be a writer, or anything creative for that matter.
I spent most of my career in the entertainment field as a Line Producer, then a Producer. What is a Line Producer? They are the people in movies who are responsible for organizing and spending the money- both things I excelled at. I mean, come on- spending money…totally my jam. Negotiating and organizing filled my type-A personality with glee. I left the “creative” stuff to people who were actually creative. (Or so I believed).
Until I was on a film that desperately needed a rewrite. I had to do the rewrite to convince the director and financier of that absolute truth.
Every ounce of “I’m not good enough, smart enough, creative enough” to write this flooded my body. The words stated to me throughout my life, “She’s pretty but not very smart… She’s got a great smile but not very talented…” echoed in my mind. The things people would say to kids dreaming big left a very deep wound, and as I began to try to write the script, I had to battle them with every click of my keyboard.
Each word written was a war with self-worth. And to my surprise, I won. That film went on to become a very successful film that had a massive impact on the world.
I was hooked. After the film came a book related to the film, and 20 years later, multiple books, blogs, essays, and my very own publishing imprint. Rampant Feline Media. After experiencing the “big time” publishers, I learned I should and can own my own creativity.
One of my greatest pleasures is creating collaborative books with other writers. Building community through our shared stories about life, love, and the pursuit of happiness.
This last weekend, I had the pleasure of spending time at two book events for my recent collaborative book Lessons Learned The Hard Way. Connecting with other creative souls desiring to share their wisdom with the world through words on a page. It was exactly what I needed in my life, especially after the last year. We had an amazing turnout at Barnes and Noble and at a lovely cafe in the evening. Listening to my collaborators share their stories and watching the audience nod, smile, and laugh as they connected with the presenters and each other filled my soul with joy. This is what we’re supposed to be doing. Gathering, sharing, connecting.
I remembered my 30-something self, scared that no one would ever read my words and feel connected to someone, that I would never be enough to make an impact. I hugged that younger version of me and felt proud that I didn’t let that fear stop me.
Whatever your fear is…meet it, thank it and send it on its way.
