Image from a scene in Barbie - Produced by Margo Robbie and Directed by Greta Gerwig - the Women who got ignored at the Oscars
So, as you may have heard, the Oscar nominations were announced yesterday and well… Oops, they did it again.
Of course, I posted on my social, about the irony that Barbie, a film about how the patriarchy literally ignores the contributions of women in favor of lifting up men, who usually don’t deserve it, was somehow ignored in the categories of Best Actress and Best Director. (Both women), while Ryan Reynolds, who played Ken was nominated – even if maybe this wasn’t really Best Supporting Actor worthy, he got the nom!
And wouldn’t you know it- in comes a man commenting on my post, telling me I should “Be happy that Barbie was nominated for anything” and then ranting about how “Bradly Cooper and lots of other men didn’t get nominated”. I kid you not; he was mad about Bradly Cooper not being nominated, and the other men… I guess he couldn’t think of the other female directors who possibly deserved a nomination… Bradly was left out… for making yet another male-centric biopic fawning over a man who may have done something interesting, but did we really need another biopic about a man? For the record, I liked Maestro, it was a nice movie for Bradley to exercise his acting chops, and I bet he had visions of Oscars dancing in his head.
This man (The butt hurt boy who commented on my post)- who shares that he watched Barbie 3 times and felt compelled to tell me (a 40-year veteran of the film industry) that I should trust him because he’s been in the biz for a long time, that her being a woman had nothing to do with it. (Insert facepalm and eye roll here). At one point I though he was just cosplaying the typical man, but nope – he was genuine.
Seriously, he went on and on about how we should be grateful the film got nominated for best picture, mind you Greta Gerwig has directed 3 films, all of which have been nominated for Best Picture, and she has only been nominated once.
And for the record- Barbie received 8 nominations, yet not best director?
Let me explain how Best Director gets nominated- All the past winners of Best Director get into a room and pick the choices. Hmmmm so let’s see, In the nearly 100-year history of the Academy Awards, women have won best director only three times. I believe there have been 68-74 Best Director awards given, so you do the math.
This isn’t just about the lack of representation of women in the room, it's also about how men, without being required to consider anyone other than their buddies in the biz, simply give out awards to the same old crew almost every year.
Certainly, there is a “surprise” newcomer, usually a man…I can agree that the films chosen were great films, but to exclude Barbie, which not only broke box office records but spoke to multiple generations and our culture and was a cinematic feat to accomplish, to say the least, is…well, just what men do.
They also double down by feeling as if they need to jump on a woman's post, expressing their frustration and irony over the Oscar snub, by basically telling women to smile and be happy we got anything and since they’re a man, their experience in the industry outweighs mine because I’m just a woman. A woman who is out here just making wild assumptions and accusations, while clearly not understanding the process… (He basically said this…) It can’t possibly have anything to do with her being a woman!
This from a man who watched Barbie 3 times…
While pouring you coffee, I humbly and with a sweet smile, suggest you watch it again with a woman to help you understand the big words.

That's the problem...many of the boys are STILL boys. Not men.
I have no words...I watched his comments unfold. I thought he was joking. No.
