We’ve all heard it before, the stories of regrets about things our Fathers, Mothers, Grandparents, Aunties, Uncles… wish they had done but didn’t.
Often I find myself saying “I’ve still got time”. But what if I don’t.
I want to give a shout out to my client Fonde. Who, about a year ago called me up with a dream and an idea. A really good one I might add for a movie or series. He had dabbled in writing but left it behind in order to pursue a more “respectable” profession. He raised his kids, did ll the “right” things and now it was his turn to do the thing he’s always wanted to do. Be a writer.
We were starting from scratch. He had no experience or education, just a passion and an idea and together, over four months we wrote a series bible for three seasons of a series and the entire script for season one.
It was a process and it was fun- even he says so. Breaking into show biz at any age is daunting and highly unlikely to actually succeed, but he went for it anyway and as of today here is a list of the awards he has one for his project.
Berlin Indie Film Festival: Best Screenplay, Feature
New York city International Screenplay Awards: selected as Semi-Finalist
New York Screeenwriting Awards: Honorable Mention
Scriptapalooza Television Writing Competition: selected as Quarter-Finalist
The Golden Script Competition: selected as Semi-Finalist (currently in consideration for finalist/winner)
This after only finishing it in the fall of 2023. It’s not been sold…yet, but he is on his way and has already begun his second screenplay with the tools I taught him.
The awards and recognition are one thing, the possibility that this project has a strong chance of moving forward is amazing. But what is more important is that Fonde has found a passion and excitement for something again in his life, all because he decided to just do it. The thing that he has always wanted to do.
